About MCT
The Music Cognitive Test (MCT) is a brief, standardised, music-based cognitive assessment designed to quantitatively evaluate general cognitive functioning.
The MCT has been validated in both Italian and UK populations and shows strong positive correlations with widely used cognitive screening tools such as the MMSE and MoCA. It was specifically developed to enable music therapists and clinicians to independently screen cognitive abilities and monitor changes over time in response to music-based interventions and therapeutic activities.
What does the MCT assess?
The Music Cognitive Test (MCT) provides a rapid yet comprehensive assessment of general cognitive functions that, according to scientific literature, are actively engaged during music-related activities.
The MCT evaluates:
- Spatial, temporal, and personal orientation
- Praxis and visuoperceptual reasoning
- Attention and inhibitory control
- Visual search and naming abilities
- Verbal comprehension and planning skills
- Verbal fluency
- Sound localisation
- Rhythmic and melodic recognition
- Short- and long-term musical memory
This integrated approach allows clinicians and music therapists to obtain a functionally relevant cognitive profile aligned with music-based interventions.
The validation of the Music Cognitive Test (MCT) was published in the peer-reviewed journal Psychology of Music (2022).

The MCT was initially validated on a sample of 335 participants aged 18 to 100, covering a wide range of cognitive profiles, from healthy cognition to severe cognitive impairment.
In a large-scale, cross-national validation study:
65% of participants were aged 60 and over & 80% of older participants lived in care home settings.
The MCT demonstrated a strong ability to reliably discriminate individuals aged 60+ with established neurocognitive conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).
These findings support the MCT as a valid and accurate cognitive screening tool for older adults, particularly suitable for use in care homes and long-term care settings.
